Transforming an Aging Balcony with Duradek
The transformation of this balcony was an extensive project aimed at revitalizing its structural integrity and aesthetics. Initially, the deck suffered from years of exposure to the elements, leading to a worn-out concrete surface, deteriorating railings, and an overall unsafe and unappealing space.
Step 1: Initial Assessment
The first stage of the project involved evaluating the deck’s current condition. The existing surface was cracked and covered in moss, with signs of water pooling that contributed to long-term structural weakening. The railing system, while still intact, had rusting metal and outdated design elements that needed replacement.
Step 2: Surface Preparation
Before applying Duradek, we needed to ensure the deck’s surface was structurally sound:
The old surface was pressure washed to remove dirt, moss, and loose debris.
Any cracks in the existing substrate were filled and smoothed to prevent imperfections from showing through the new waterproof membrane.
The perimeter was reinforced with proper edge flashing to create a secure border for the Duradek installation.
Step 3: Duradek Installation
With a properly prepped surface, the waterproof Duradek vinyl membrane was installed:
The membrane was measured, cut, and laid out strategically to minimize seams.
A specialized adhesive was applied evenly to ensure maximum bonding.
Using a roller, we carefully pressed the vinyl onto the surface, eliminating any air bubbles.
The seams were heat-welded to form a fully waterproof, continuous surface.
Step 4: Railing System Replacement
To complement the fresh, clean look of the new deck, we installed a modern aluminum railing system:
The old railings were completely removed and replaced with sleek black aluminum posts and balusters.
The new railings provided enhanced durability, safety, and an updated aesthetic appeal.
The posts were securely anchored into the deck surface, with additional waterproofing applied around each penetration point.
Step 5: Final Touches and Inspection
With the new Duradek surface and railing system in place, we completed the following:
A final inspection ensured all seams were properly sealed and edges secured.
Excess materials and debris were cleared from the site.
The deck was tested for waterproofing efficiency and overall safety compliance.
Conclusion
The completed project resulted in a stunning and functional outdoor space. The Duradek installation not only revitalized the balcony’s appearance but also provided a long-lasting, maintenance-free waterproofing solution. The modern railings added an elegant touch, enhancing the overall curb appeal of the home. This transformation ensured that the homeowners could enjoy their deck for years to come without worrying about weather damage or ongoing maintenance.
